It is a constant field of discovery where your expectations are turned on their heads daily. For instance I was trying to figure out what the seeds of Rock Spirea (Holodiscus microphyllus) above looked like. This was no idle search, my job is to collect certain seeds from plants native to the area so we can repair the damage done by necessary road construction. I had yet to observe viable seeds from this plant and needed picture for documentation. I discovered that they were small (read invisible), light, and scattered in the wind. Now most seeds that match that description, at least the ones at this location, tend to have flat sheaths that act as a sail to catch the wind for dispersal. But when I finally got one of the seeds under the dissecting scope this is what I found...
