Confronting the Truth - Excerpt 13 - Flying Sparks - A Novel – The Mystery Deepens
Drake McCarty’s leg was shattered deep in the wilderness, and as the flash flood closed over him, he looked death in the face.
When he wakes up in a hospital bed, in a military base that shouldn’t exist, he has a whole leg and a furious sister to deal with.
Drake is sworn to keep a secret he doesn’t understand, but whatever pulled him out of the flood, isn’t quite done with him yet, because even if you leave nothing but footprints, the things that walk the forest can still follow you home.
Excerpt 13
“Come in boy!” the soft, slightly rough voice ordered.
Shaking his head the youth turned the tarnished brass knob and stepped into the office. Tall metal file cabinets covered most of the walls, shrinking the room dramatically. The wall space above them was covered with photos ranging from WWII vintage to a fresh picture of the president. A massive oak desk filled most of the floor. The surface was strictly organized with a lamp, an office phone, and a photo of a large family on a farm. Two overstuffed chairs sat in front and an ergonomic office chair behind. Sitting ramrod straight is the soft leather was a smiling old man in a crisp camouflage uniform. The square in the center of his chest bore a single embroidered star and his name tape identified him as Hall. Drake noted curiously that it was the same rank as in an old photo on the wall of a much younger General Hall in a fancier dress uniform and of the ribbons that decorated the photograph none denoted any action after the forties. The regulation cover sat on a thin head of graying hair but the faded blue eyes gleamed sharply. With a start he realized he had been asked a question.
“I’m sorry sir,” Drake stated with a jerk. “I wasn’t listening.”
The general gave a soft chuckle and indicated the chairs. “Have a seat son. We have a few questions for you and I’ve no doubt that you have many of your own. I am General Hall.”
