Obviously being able to express an idea clearly and accurately in the written form is important for an author. Also not surprisingly this comes in handy in other areas of life. For instance: when a large and famous global mailing company writes out the instructions for affixing shipping labels to boxes they should really make sure that said instructions make sense.
My crew lead handed me a sheet of stickers with instructions on them with a puzzled look on her face. I was skeptical that my own ability to understand paperwork would exceed her own and to no one's surprise the very specific instructions made no sense to me. I ended up calling the central office of the shipping company and the voice on the other end of the line sounded just as confused, but she did tell me where to put the stickers.
