Drake McCarty’s leg was shattered deep in the wilderness, and as the flash flood closed over him, he looked death in the face.
When he wakes up in a hospital bed, in a military base that shouldn’t exist, he has a whole leg and a furious sister to deal with.
Drake is sworn to keep a secret he doesn’t understand, but whatever pulled him out of the flood, isn’t quite done with him yet, because even if you leave nothing but footprints, the things that walk the forest can still follow you home.
Excerpt 21
Ama flexed her hands furiously and glared at the Pleiades. If that woman thought for a moment this would make her reconsider she could take her conceited, overbearing, ignorant attitude and shove it out one of the tiny little windows on the utterly useless hybrid she drove. Ama caught that vindictive train of thought and sent up a quick prayer for forgiveness.
“Not my place to judge,” she muttered flipping her pillow over to get at the cool side.
Hoping the fresh air would clear her mind and allow her to settle the woman slipped into a handy set of moccasins and stepped out of her room. The door was the one improvement she had asked the landlord to make. Sometimes a girl just needed to escape she had explained. Many the moonlit night she had wandered the garden or the forest around their unconventional house. Now she simply leaned back against the old wooden sides of the barn and stared up at the night sky.
“Oh Mother,” she groaned into the night. “How did I ever think I could handle this, handle them alone?”
