Humans are Weird - Undone

First Sister selected a packet of juice from the cold storage and ripped it open between her mandibles with a satisfied click. As this planet tilted back away from its sun, and the growing season closed, the workload had increased in all the local hives. She strongly suspected she had been sent to ‘help’ the human hive because First Father judged she had been overworking herself. Which she hadn’t she mused with frustration as she navigated her way between the piles of human foot protection back towards the room she shared with Human Second Cousin Betty. She had, in her own judgment, simply been taking on the appropriate duties for a First Sister well into her last few molts before reaching full maturity.
She finished the juice packet, reveling in the rich flavor of the liquid before shredding and eating the packaging as she lingered outside the door to Human Second Cousin Betty’s room. For some reason human hearing grew acute just before they fell asleep. Second Grandmother had tried to explain it to First Sister once, something about how the horrible predators of the human homeworld liked to hunt in the gloaming, and how anything that sounded of stealthy feat crunching the leaves of the garden paths during this time triggered the humans’ fight, flight, or freeze response. It had terrified First Sister at the time, but now she had simply internalized it as ‘don’t make the sounds of ripping fibers when humans are trying to fall asleep’. Though, now Human Second Cousin Betty should be well into the light ‘dream’ sleep humans started the night with.
First Sister flicked her proboscis over her mandibles and opened the door. Human Second Cousin Betty was lying stiff and very still on her flat surface of a bed, a sign that she was still trying to go to sleep rather than sleeping as First Sister quietly arranged herself on the sleeping couch that the humans had provided for her. However just as First Sister was about to drift off into the unawareness of sleep Human Second Cousin Betty took a long, loud breath and rolled over to look at her with a mournful expression.
“I didn’t get the gourds in today,” Human Second Cousin Betty said.
First Sister tilted her head at her friend in the semi-darkness of the room though, she suspected human eyes couldn’t make out the gesture. Still, Human Second Cousin Betty seemed to respond.
“Every night brings the threat of frost,” she went on. “I really need to get the gourds in.”
“You used your gardening time very wisely today,” First Sister observed. “You completed many high priority tasks on the main list.”
“But I didn’t get the gourds in,” the human muttered as she rotated her body like a log tumbling in a stream. “There weren’t many. It was a really-” her voice was interrupted by a long gaping yawn, “small task.”
“You preformed over two-dozen small, harvest related tasks today,” First Sister pointed out.
Human Second Cousin Betty huffed, as if she was annoyed at something, possibly First Sister’s lack of sympathy from the context of the situation.
“So because you do not have infinite time or energy for today’s tasks,” First Sister pointed out, “you are stressing to the point that you are interfering with the time and energy you have for tomorrow’s tasks.”
“First Brother would understand,” Human Second Cousin Betty muttered, the sound partially muted by another roll.
“No,” First Sister said slowly, tilting her head to the side. “First Brother would empathize…”
She carefully stood and walked over to Human Second Cousin Betty, who was now facing the wall.
“I am going to touch you and I am not engaged in dangerous behavior,” First Sister said clearly.
Human Second Cousin Betty was a deeply trusted friend but if one had easily damageable joints one did not surprise a human with touch during the dim time when their brains were scanning every input for remembered giant felidae species with fangs as long as your arm. Human Second Cousin Betty turned her blinking, bifocal eyes on First Sister in confusion as First Sister gently brought her hand down on the human’s head.
“There, there,” First Sister said in soothing tones. “You worked very hard and did everything you could today. We will get the gourds in tomorrow.”
Human Second Cousin Betty stared up at her in blank confusion for a moment, before bursting out into cackling laughter. There was a thump on the other side of the wooden wall of the human hive and she muted the sound of her mirth.
“Go back to bed First Sister,” she managed to gasp out between fits of muffled laughter.
First Sister did so, content that she had managed to sooth at least some part of Human Second Cousin Betty’s stress with her show of masculine empathy. At least, the human stopped tossing and her breathing had settled into a more even pattern by the time First Sister’s awareness faded.

A cavern bathed in fire.
A world of the cusp of change.
A threat from beyond the stars.

Bard has led his pool of outcast warriors across the stars to this strange new planet with its cold, nearly dead surface. For years they clung to each other in the magma caverns only going to the surface to humor the curiosity of their hosts, until the day a young alien wandered into Bard’s song and resonated with him, and gave his pool a hope of something more.
Now a dark threat from Bard’s homeworld threatens the fragile connection he has formed with this alien family, and the stars sing of war.

Humans are Weird - Gourd Day

Humans are Weird - Gourd Day
Liftssignificantly leisurely stretched out her appendages as the temperature in her sleeping cove rose rapidly, lowered suddenly, and then evened out at a comfortable swimming temperature.
“Why did you set the alarm for so early in the sleep schedule?” grumbled Plopsin rolling away from her and tucking his appendages tightly in.
“Today is an important human festival,” Liftssignificantly said as she selected a moisturizing package from the wall of the sleeping cove. “I am attending it with Human Friend Freddy.”
“Oh yes,” Plopsin murmured as he extended a single gripping appendage to adjust the temperature to a more comfortable resting environment. “The celebration of the gourd species being ripe. Bring me a taste please.”
“For scientific study or to eat?” Liftssignificantly asked.
“To eat,” Plopsin said. “Gourd flesh is delicious and almost the perfect texture if you soak it in the water the right length of time.”
“I will try,” Liftssignificantly assured him, “buy you know how many abrasive points humans have about sharing food with sapients after it has been once gifted to non-sapient species.”
“That a matter of justice to them?” Plopsin asked, actually stirring with curiosity.
“No,” Liftsignificantly said as she pushed towards the surface. “It’s a matter of pathogen paranoia.”
“Just tell them that the scary germs won’t hurt me,” Plopsin said with an amused hum.
“I will do that,” Liftssignificantly assured him as she swam away.
Liftssignificantly reached the portal to the main corridor of the habitat and shuffled out into the dry, unnatural space, all ninety-degree angles and distant echos of sound, save for the soothingly organic but very alien swirl of sound and motion several unds away.
“Underneath the harvest moon! We, I mean the harvest moons! We spin and laugh and dance and croon-” Human Friend Freddy was singing as she tumbled around some invisible vertical axis.
Human posture language was very expressive when they danced, but the utter lack of conversational training in most of the population meant that all it actually communicated was a general emotional tone and energy level. Human Friend Freddy apparently felt full of delight to bursting, and full of energy. Liftsignificantly idly wondered how many injuries there would be today.
“Underneath the harvest – Ooop!” Human Friend Freddy caught sight of Liftssignificantly and ended her song and dance with a cry and a gesture that declared she had lost her balance with her concentration. “Lift! Baby! Sweety! Are you ready for a show?”
“Reaching the Lumberback enclosure in time for the ceremony is the reason I agreed to meet you here at this time,” Liftssignificantly assented, lifting her gripping appendages in the standard request for ‘uppies’.
Human Friend Freddy swooped down and snatched her up, staggering and grunting a bit under her weight, but her face, what little of it was visible around the ‘beanie’ and ‘scarf’ was flushed with the colors of delight still, and her stripes pulsed with health and well-being.
“You are feeling well,” Liftssignificantly observed as they mutually shuffled around so that Liftssignificantly could wriggle down into the space between Human Friend Freddy’s coat and her inner insulation layers.
“I am!” Human Friend Freddy agreed, her mass swaying as her feet, appendages so far from her body that the local cultural mythos claimed that they were controlled by a separate awareness concentration somewhere in the human spine. “The sky is clear, the weather report is good, and the lumberbacks are fully healthy and acting eager for the gourds today!”
“All prosperous signs,” Liftssignificantly agreed as they left the protection of the building and stepped out into the pre-dawn starlight.
The third moon was just abandoning the sky, and was a dim blur of light. The chaotic star-song filled most of the sky still but the sun-song was just beginning to compete. The night air was dry as bleached coral and cold enough that Liftssignficiantly only left her two gripping appendages out to observe, and laid them tightly against the warmth of Human Friend Freddy’s neck as the human shuffled about, pulling on gloves, adjusting her scarf, and generally managing her thermal gradient. That done the human puffed out a few clouds of warm air, deliberately forming them into rings and orbs before laughing softly and setting out on foot for the lumberback enclosures.
They reached the open ‘paddock’, a flat area enclosed by poles, easy enough for an Undulate, or a human to get through but impenetrable to the lumberback’s it restrained, just as the sun-song began to overwhelm the star-song.
“We’re in time to see them bring Big Bertha in!” Human Friend Freddy called out in delight, jostling her way to the front of the small crowd of humans who had also gathered to watch the show.
Liftssignificantly eased more appendages out to get a clearer view of the scene. Two humans were guiding an anti-grav transport into the enclosure from a gate in the far side. Already several massive fruiting bodies were placed around the central area of the space, brightly colored and reflecting in a way that suggested they were hard as old coral. However the one that the humans were bringing in now was easily more massive than a human and lumpy in that way that terrestrial plants did get from fighting gravity their entire existences.
“Those would probably be a more pleasing shape if you grew them under sufficient water to support them properly,” suggested Liftssignificantly.
Human Friend Freddy laughed at that and climbed up the fence to elevate them for no reason that Liftssignificantly could discern.
“What would be a more pleasing shape?” the human asked as the giant fruiting body was rolled onto the ground and its attendants left the space.
“Closer to a natural sphere,” Liftssignificantly said.
Before Human Friend Freddy could respond however the doors to the structure that made up one wall of the enclosure opened with a rush of warm, animal smelling air and four giant forms lumbered out. The human fell silent as the quadrupeds with their long-thin appendages, joints bent high above their thick backs, slowly swung their heads from side to side. Four eyes, spaced evenly around their boulder like heads blinked in the slowly growing light. Long slits of nostrils, running from their wide moths to the backs of their skulls flared and sealed as they scented the cold air, sending out little puffs of moist vapor. The calm moment was finally broken as the largest lumberback suddenly swung its body towards Big Bertha and gave a bellow of excitement. There was a matching murmur from the humans, as it charged towards the fruiting body, paused over it a moment, and then raised one long appendage high above its head before bringing it down on the fruiting body with a loud crack. There was a wild cheer of delight from the humans, that only grew louder when the lumberback shoved its entire head into the mass of pulp and began to loudly grind the material between its wide teeth.
The rest of the herd of animals attacked the remaining gourds to the cheers of the human crowd and Liftssignificantly shifted to get a better look at the crowd of humans.
“These animals are well fed in general,” she observed. “There is nothing unusual in them eating publicly.”
“True that,” Human Friend Freddy agreed.
“Humans have no animosity towards these fruiting bodies.”
“Nope.”
“So why,” Liftssignificantly asked, “do you take such joy in their destruction?”
Human Friend Freddy only laughed and waved at the spectacle that was still engrossing the humans.
“Look at them go at it!” she declared. “Who wouldn’t cheer that on!”
Liftssignificantly quietly divided her attention between the crowd of humans and the feeding lumberbacks as she tried to form a question that would get Human Friend Freddy to explain whether it was the destruction of the giant, misshapen ‘gourds’ as she called them, or the feeding of the lumberbacks that was the attraction of the scene.

Humans are Weird - Twist

Sift came slowly awake to the sensation of being deliciously warm. She blinked lazily and yawned, luxuriating in the sensation of warmth and compression. The idle thought that she had not packed a compression blanket for this trip filtered through her sleep haze, followed by the thought that this one had gotten oddly tangled over the course of the cold night on the alien world. It seemed to have rolled and bunched up over her shoulders and the base of her tail, and yet somehow it was still bathing her in an even warmth. She cracked on set of eyelids open just far enough to gauge the light levels and determined that it was much to early to wake, but the puzzle of how the compression blanket had fallen in two thick rolls like that itched at her paws. As her mind woke more the thought that modern compression blankets used elastic strength and not weight and would not have rolled like that at all bubbled up and she flared her nostrils to draw in a long frustrated breath, filling her lungs with the warm musk of mammal.
Sift gave an amused gurgle as memory reasserted itself and she snuggled closer to her sleeping companion. Mary’s internal parts, probably her mass of intestines, gave a gurgle as they processed yesterday’s meal of raw greens, such an odd human indulgence, and Mary’s arms tightened comfortingly around Sift. Sift felt a vague sense of superiority to the Shatar as the compression of the thick, mammalian limbs closed around her. Apparently this ‘cuddle’ reflex was the main reason that Shatar did not sleep-share with humans, their fragile limb-joints could not stand the affectionate embrace. Sift gave a yawn and decided that she would not try to go back to sleep. It would be delicious to just enjoy the warmth and the compression until Mary woke.
However that dream faded quickly to condensate as Mary suddenly began to shift, and then gave a pained groan, pulling herself, and the insulating blankets off of Sift.
“Mary, are you okay?” Sift demanded, wriggling around to place a paw on Mary’s bulging belly. “Is this those ‘contractions’?”
Mary stared down at her through bleary eyes, propping her mass up on one bent arm, before shaking her head. The human’s face was contorted with pain however and she lurched out of the nest of blankets, first to her knees, and then to her feet, making sure at least to drop the still warm blankets over Sift.
Sift poked her head out of the blankets and watched with lessening concern but growing confusion as Mary began to swing her limbs around in those giant circles that were so unnerving. Forelimbs should not be able to reach that far behind your spine. However Sift has seen this movement pattern many times before and was familiar enough with how it should proceed that she was able to tell where it was going wrong now. Sift squirmed over to where her note pad lay beside the sleeping nest and began scribbling in observations. Mary clearly had stiffness and pain in her left shoulder and hip that had not been there when they went to bed. The human was cycling her body through movements meant to loosen her muscles and tendons, but from the way she flinched each time she reached a particular point on one arc showed that this was more than the usual nighttime coolness.
Mary suddenly gave a gasp of pain and staggered to the side.
“Do you need help?” Sift called out. “Should I contact Martha?”
Mary’s young cousin, who had been sent to assist her through the stressful mammalian gestation period, was sleeping in the next room. Sift had felt a little uncomfortable taking the prefered shared sleeping position but Martha had explained that regardless of Sift’s presence she refused to share a bed because Mary was ‘grabby’.
“No,” Mary grunted out, clutching her shoulder as she staggered towards the skinny human cupboard that coated the walls. “I just need a pain killer.”
“What is causing this pain?” Sift demanded, abandoning the warm nest to follow Mary across the room.
Mary glanced down at her with a rueful smile as she selected the container of analgesic and staggered towards the kitchen.
“I just slept wrong,” Mary explained. “This,” she patted her belly, “has thrown off my center of mass like strapping an iron or asteroid to a mining tug, and as nice as it is to have you here, you are not nearly as good a body pillow as my Snookums. I really need to get a proper body pillow for when he’s gone...”
Sift processed that as Mary got water, drank down the analgesic and staggered back to bed. Apparently, humans required their mates as sleeping partners in order to keep their complex and lanky skeletons properly balanced, and if they did not have one, they had artificial replacements. Sift scurried after Mary as the human lumbered back towards the sleeping nest.
“Might I procure one for you as a ‘baby shower gift’?” Sift asked.
“You already got me a gift,” Mary pointed out with a yawn as she folded her body back down into the bed.
“That is true,” Sift agreed hesitantly.
Mary gave a soft laugh as Sift snuggled back up to her.
“But if I say yes you get to use me for research into human gestational bio-mechanics?” the human hazarded.
Sift licked her teeth in amusement.
“Nothing wrong with that,” she said.
“Sure,” Mary said with a yawn, “you can help me shop for one.”
Sift adjusted the blankets around them with a happy hum as the human drifted back to sleep.

From ghoulies, and ghosties, and long-leggedy beasties, and things that go boomp in the night; Good Lord deliver us.
Traditional Scottish Prayer

A cavern bathed in fire.
A world of the cusp of change.
A threat from beyond the stars.

Bard has led his pool of outcast warriors across the stars to this strange new planet with its cold, nearly dead surface. For years they clung to each other in the magma caverns only going to the surface to humor the curiosity of their hosts, until the day a young alien wandered into Bard’s song and resonated with him, and gave his pool a hope of something more.
Now a dark threat from Bard’s homeworld threatens the fragile connection he has formed with this alien family, and the stars sing of war.
